OBD, bench or boot: which ECU read a file desk can actually use

The tool on the laptop is not the brief. OBD, bench and boot are three different dumps. Send the one your tool actually produced, named like a person.

OBD, bench or boot: which ECU read a file desk can actually use

Reviewed by the lab desk before it went live. We write files; we do not rubber-stamp brochure numbers.

Workshops treat the read method as a brand loyalty test. Autotuner people sneer at Kess people. Bench people talk as if OBD is a toy. None of that writes a file. The desk sees a dump. Either it is a full read of that ECU family, or it is a 200 kb souvenir from a tool that timed out on the OBD socket.

OBD is the socket in the car. Fine on a lot of older Bosch EDC17 and MEG17 work when the tool lists that chassis as supported on the cable. It is not fine because the customer is already late and you do not want to lift the ECU. If the tool says the family is bench-only, believe the tool. A half-read over OBD is how a Monday Stage 1 becomes a recovery on Thursday.

Bench is the ECU on the table, powered, clipped or soldered the way that tool manual says. Slower to start. Cleaner on locked newer boxes, on many MD1 / MG1 jobs, and on anything that already threw a timeout on the dash plug. You do not owe the customer a story about why the lid came off. You owe the desk a complete binary.

Boot is the last door on some families: opened case, boot pin, sometimes a frame that looks like jewellery. It is not a personality. It is what that silicon wants when the other two paths are blocked. If your tool produced a boot file, say boot on the ticket. Do not rename it to look like an OBD read. Mixing protocols on the way back is how a quiet dash becomes a brick conversation.

Virtual reads and same-ECU-as-last-week are not a method. If you did not read this car, say so. We would rather wait for a real dump than invent maps on a cousin file from a Facebook folder. Checksum after the write is your bay. We do not remote-desktop the laptop in the yard.

Name the file like a person. BMW_320d_2018_EDC17_OBD.bin is a brief. dump.bin is a shrug. If the tool spat two files, send both and say which one you will write back. Circuit and motorsport only. A prettier protocol does not make a street ticket.
